It can be challenging to find a comforter to fit this specialty size mattress properly. At a typical department store, you will find oversized king comforters that measure 106"x96" to 108"x98". This gives a typical king bed 28-30 inches of extra material to drape, but by the time you get in bed and increase the height, the comforter will barely cover the top side of the bed. To determine the amount of side coverage you have, divide the 28-30 inch excess by 2. You now have 14-15 inches of drape on the side of the bed.

Using an oversizedcomforter on a Cal King bed is best because you get the benefit of extra side coverage (about 3-4 inches extra per side). For the foot length (84 inches), you will have approximately 12-14 inches of drape, assuming the comforter is pulled to the top of the bed and not slightly folded over.

The first step in determining a proper comforter size for your bed is to measure your mattress. While mattress sizes are standard in terms of length and width, the thickness can vary. Pillow top mattresses and those with extra comfort layers can create much thicker mattresses. These will require comforters with extra width in order to hang down long enough on the sides.

Extra-high bed frames require wider comforters, otherwise, they may fall too short on the sides. And with shorter bed frames, you may find your comforter is far too long and droops onto the floor, looking too much like a bed skirt for some sleepers.

How low you like your comforter to sit is primarily determined by personal preference; however, most people prefer their comforter be long enough to fully cover their bed frame but short enough to not drag along the floor. If you have a box spring or mattress foundation with a bed skirt, try to keep one-third to one-half of the skirt visible for the cleanest look.

An oversized comforter offers more width without any extra length. These comforters are ideal for anyone with a particularly thick mattress, especially those with pillow tops or additional comfort layers.

Mattresses like these require more material width-wise because they are so thick. A queen comforter will usually measure 86 to 88 inches in width, while an oversized queen comforter will measure roughly 115 inches wide.

Some brands sell comforters in a full/queen size, even though the two are very different sizes; a full size mattress measures 54 by 75 inches and a queen bed measures 60 by 80 inches. These full/queen comforters can range anywhere from 81 to 88 inches in width and 86 to 100 inches in length. The wide range in sizing can lead to a poorly fitting comforter for either size mattress.

If you have a full size bed, look for a comforter between 81 and 84 inches wide, and 86 to 88 inches long. For queen size mattresses, a comforter ranging from 86 to 88 inches in width and 96 to 100 inches in length will fit the best.

A king comforter that will properly fit a California king bed will measure somewhere between 107 to 110 inches wide, and 96 to 98 inches long. A king comforter this size will provide enough coverage for a Cal king size mattress which measures 72 inches wide and 84 inches long.

You can always measure your mattress to make sure you purchase the correct size comforter. To determine the best width of an oversized comforter, measure how wide your mattress is, and how thick it is on both sides. These measurements added together will determine the necessary minimum width of a comforter.

When buying a comforter for a king-size bed in particular, size matters. Any other comforter size probably won't fit the bed properly, and even some king-size comforters may not hang over the edges of the bed the way you like. For this reason, it's important to read the measurements on several different comforter options before making a purchase.

A king-size mattress measures 76 inches wide and 80 inches long, so any comforter, quilt or duvet purchased to top the bed should be at least a few inches wider and longer. King-size comforter dimensions vary from one brand and style to the next, and there is no exact measurement considered to be standard. Many king comforters measure 96 inches wide, but the length ranges from 106 inches to 110 inches on average.

While a king-size comforter may look perfectly fine on a queen-size bed, the opposite is not always true. The size difference between a queen and king comforter can be significant. Queen-size comforters range in width from 92 to 96 inches, while the length can be anywhere from 96 to 110 inches. In other words, some comforters labeled for a queen bed are virtually identical to a king-size comforter, while others are both narrower and shorter.

If the comforter measures at least 96 inches wide and 106 inches long, it will fit a king-size bed. A comforter size chart, offered by online bedding retailers, shows various comforter sizes in inches, making it easy to compare comforters by brand or style. In some cases, in-store package labeling may also include a size chart that lists every size available for that particular comforter style.

If your mattress is a California king rather than a standard king, the comforter length really comes into play. A California king mattress measures 72 inches wide and 84 inches long, so it is both 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king mattress.

The width of any king-size comforter will fit a California king as well, but the length may be an issue. Opt for comforters specifically made for a California king bed or choose a king-size comforter that's on the long side, near 110 inches. Anything significantly shorter may seem a little short on the bed both visually and while lying beneath the covers.

King-size duvet covers, which go over duvets in much the same way that pillowcases go over pillows, are approximately the same size as a king-size comforter. As with the comforter, duvet cover sizes vary from one brand to the next, so read the package label to ensure a good fit for both the bed and your duvet.

A bedspread, on the other hand, tends to be much larger than a comforter or duvet cover, as it's designed to hang down nearly to the floor. A bedspread may be 128 inches wide and 124 inches long. A coverlet, which barely hangs over the top of the bed, is significantly smaller, averaging 108 inches wide and 96 inches long.

A breathable comforter will keep you from getting too hot. A lightweight comforter may allow more freedom to move around. However, in some situations, a slightly heavier comforter can be cozier and better help you relax for the night.
